Demographics of Artists

What?

This is the demographics distribution of Artists’ data (2014-2019) from IPUMS USA. Hover over the segments to identify the demographics sequence of various artists such as dancers and musicians etc. You will find the percentage of users in the middle of the visualization of the respective demographic sequence. You will find the sequence mentioned at the top of the visualization. At a single glance, one can compare the levels of a specific characteristic such as gender, etc.

Why?

This dynamic visualization displays the demographics of the artist populations. It identifies specific characteristics of individuals that help policy-makers make data-driven policies and decisions. This visualization also helps an individual get a quick idea of artists’ demographics in 2014-2019.

Insights and Action:

  1. Dancers as artists are least represented. Further research can be conducted and special compensation/health insurance-oriented policies can be implemented to encourage more dancers around the country.
  2. With a low percentage of artists from a specific set of races, one of the policies could be around encouraging various individuals from all races into arts leading to inclusion and diversity in Artspace.
  3. The percentage of the young population is quite low among various arts. More students should be encouraged to pursue certain art with scholarships, fee waivers, and free education.

Further Improvements:

  1. To make this visualization more dynamic by using year-on-year data rather than combining all the year’s data. This will help us observe the demographical trends and variations from 1950 to 2019, thus helping the users make informed decisions.
  2. With more time in hand, only specific characteristics can be picked after statistical analysis, thus helping users easily understand the necessary aspects of artists.

Note: Used a sunburst template from Observable to portray demographics. The data is pulled from IPUMS USA for the year 2014 to 2019 separately. Further, the data is crunched in R and visualized in D3. Please refer to the attached file “demo_final.csv” for the data.
