Arts Midwest – Map Data on Arts Nonprofits from the IRS BMF

This map visualizes data from the IRS Business Master File (BMF) on nonprofit organizations, aggregated at the state level for analytical clarity. The original dataset, updated regularly by the IRS, includes detailed records on tax-exempt organizations across the United States.

For this visualization, we filtered the data to focus on arts-related nonprofits and summarized key indicators by state. Specifically, we calculated the average revenue and average organizational age for arts nonprofits and for all nonprofits within each state. These metrics provide a broad view of the presence, financial capacity, and longevity of arts nonprofits relative to the wider nonprofit sector in each state.

Reminder: All map values represent state-level totals or averages. Individual city or county names appearing on the map are for orientation purposes only and should not be interpreted as data points.
