This dataset is drawn from the 2023 American Community Survey (ACS), an annual survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau that collects detailed information on employment, income, education, and demographics from a nationally representative sample. For this project, data were filtered to include respondents from the nine-state Midwestern region served by Arts Midwest, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
The dataset includes information on individuals working in artistic occupations allowing for a detailed portrait of the region’s creative workforce. Specifically, we include Artists and related workers; Commercial and industrial designers; Fashion designers; Floral designers; Graphic designers; Interior designers; Other designers; Actors; Producers and directors; Dancers and choreographers; Music directors and composers; Musicians and singers; Disc jockeys, except radio; Entertainers and performers, sports and related workers, all other; Broadcast announcers and radio disc jockeys; Editors; Technical writers; Writers and authors/ Media and communication workers, all other.
There are a total of 33,864 individuals in the data for the nine states represented.
This analysis was developed in partnership with Arts Midwest to better understand the landscape of creative labor across the Midwest. A data brief highlighting findings from the 2023 American Community Survey is available on the Arts Midwest website.
