This map visualizes data from the Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Account (ACPSA), a joint effort of the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to measure the annual size of arts and cultural economic activity across the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
For this visualization, we use ACPSA’s primary measures—value added (a GDP-like measure of economic contribution), employment, and employee compensation—expressed as per-capita (for value added and employment) and per-job (for compensation) figures for 2023, the most recent year available. Data are shown for all arts and cultural industries combined, as well as separately for “core” industries (those that create artistic and cultural content) and “supporting” industries (those that distribute, exhibit, or enable that content). These metrics provide a detailed view of the scale, workforce presence, and earning capacity of arts and cultural production in each state.
